Travel Guides: Which One Do You Use?

I’ll be completely transparent and say up front that I have never used a travel guide in my life. At a wedding this weekend, a friend suggested that I purchase the Lonely Planet travel guide for Italy. So, on a whim, I went out and purchased the Lonely Planet Discover Italy guide.

At the store I realized there are so many different guides to choose from. How do you know which one is right for you? Where do you begin your search? How far in advance should you purchase one? Why?

Lonely Planet, Rick Steves, Frommer’s and Fodor’s are a few brands I’ve heard of. What’s the difference? Which one is best? As a novice traveler, I can’t tell you. This is where I reach out to you and ask for your opinions. In return, I will give mine on Lonely Planet when I return from my trip. This book will keep me thoroughly entertained during my eight-hour layover in NYC.

Thanks in advance for all your comments/opinions on which travel guide you like best! The more details you give, the better.
